Bonjour les parents,

The first month flew by and it’s been really great!  We’ve had lots of fun!

This month, our themes will be spiders and les monstres!  Spiders will be done mostly in English but it will also be integrated with science, art and math. Les monstres will be done in French but will also be integrated with art and math.  Of course, it also goes very well with Halloween!

Here’s what’s in store for the month:

Mathématiques: We will be concentrating on graphing (concrete graphs, pictographs and bar graphs with legends).  We will continue with identifying characteristics and rules of sorted groups with patterning and shapes.  We will continue working with tens (les dizaines) and ones (les unités) by doing a variety of activities.  There will be a strong emphasis on this last part to allow better understanding of number sense and internalizing more complex concepts as the year continues.  Our weekly routines run throughout the whole year which includes counting, number sense strategies, calendar, estimating, word problems, number of the day, centres, mental math, etc.

E.L.A.: As mentioned above, we will be concentrating mostly on learning about spiders.  We will be doing a research project about spiders along with a variety of activities about spiders.  It’s a very interesting and fun-filled unit.  We will also do activities about fall, Thanksgiving Day and Halloween.  Regular class routines will continue throughout the year such as journal writing, centres, spelling, message book, poetry, etc.
This year, there are many classes participating in a “Global Read Aloud”.  This is a global initiative where books are choses for certain grade levels and then you connect with another class from the world and communicate about the book (like pen pals).  The book for grades 2 and 3 is called: Stella Diaz Has Something to Say

Français: During this month, we will be doing a unit on “Les monstres”.  We will also be doing activities about fall, Thanksgiving Day and Halloween.  Regular class routines will continue throughout the year such as Étoile de la classe, les sons, message book, poetry, etc.

Sciences Humaines: We will continue with the unit « Ma Communauté/les besoins et les désires » (My Community/Needs and Wants).

Have a great month and see you at Tri-conferences next week!

Merci,
Mme. Kovach
